How to Enter MGRS in a Garmin GPS

Switch to MGRS format in Setup → Units, then enter the grid zone, 100km square, and numeric digits.

Garmin handhelds fully support MGRS display and entry. This format is used by military personnel, SAR teams, and anyone working from NATO maps. The process is similar to UTM entry but uses the MGRS format string.

Step 1: Enable MGRS Mode

On all Garmin handhelds: Main Menu → Setup → Units → Position Format → MGRS. The coordinate display will change to show Grid Zone Designator, 100km square, and 10-digit grid reference.

Step 2: Enter an MGRS Waypoint

Go to Waypoint Manager → Create Waypoint → Edit Location. With MGRS selected, enter: (1) The two-digit zone number, (2) The zone letter, (3) The two 100km square letters, (4) The easting digits (up to 5), (5) The northing digits (up to 5).

Six-Digit vs. Ten-Digit Entry

For a six-digit grid reference (100m precision), enter 3 easting and 3 northing digits. For 10-digit (1m precision), enter 5 of each. The Garmin will pad shorter entries with zeros.

Verifying Your Entry

After entering, the Garmin will display the resulting lat/long. Cross-check against the expected location on a map. Common errors: reversed easting/northing, wrong zone letter, missing leading zeros.
