How to Enter UTM Coordinates in a Garmin GPS

Change your Garmin's coordinate format to UTM, then enter zone, easting, and northing.

Garmin GPS devices support UTM coordinates but default to DDM. Switching to UTM mode and entering a waypoint takes less than a minute once you know where to look. This guide covers all major Garmin handheld series.

Step 1: Change Position Format to UTM

On eTrex and GPSMAP series: Main Menu → Setup → Units → Position Format → UTM UPS. On Montana/Oregon: Menu Menu → Setup → Position Format → UTM UPS. The display will now show coordinates as zone + easting + northing (e.g., 10T 550254 5272543).

Step 2: Create a New Waypoint

On eTrex: Mark Waypoint button → Edit → tap on the coordinate field. On GPSMAP: Waypoint Manager → Create Waypoint → Edit Location. You will see fields for the UTM zone letter, zone number, easting, and northing.

Step 3: Enter the UTM Coordinates

Use the rocker/joystick to select each character. For zone: enter the number (1–60) and letter (C–X) separately. For easting: enter the 6 or 7 digit value. For northing: enter the 7 digit value. Confirm and save.

Using GpsMap 66 Series with UTM

The GPSMAP 66 has a keyboard for direct text entry. Switch to UTM in Setup → Units, then enter the full coordinate string in the format "10T 550254 5272543". The device will parse the zone, easting, and northing automatically.

Reading UTM from a Topo Map

USGS topo maps have UTM grid lines spaced 1km apart. The grid numbers (e.g., 550 for 550,000m easting) appear at the top and left margins. Match the grid square that contains your target location and interpolate for sub-kilometer accuracy.
