GPS Coordinates for Hikers and Backpackers

Most hiking GPS devices default to DDM — but topo maps use UTM. Know both.

Navigating backcountry with a GPS device is much easier when you understand coordinate formats. Your Garmin handheld may display in DDM by default, but the USGS topo map in your pack uses UTM grids. And trail guides often give coordinates in DD or DMS. This guide covers everything you need.

Garmin Handheld GPS Defaults

Garmin handheld GPS devices (inReach, GPSMAP series, eTrex) default to DDM format (hddd°mm.mmm'). To change: Main Menu → Setup → Units → Position Format. Options include DD, DMS, DDM, UTM, MGRS, and others. For topo map navigation, switching to UTM simplifies grid reading.

Reading UTM Grids on USGS Topo Maps

USGS 7.5-minute topo maps have blue UTM grid ticks on the margins. The grid lines are spaced 1,000m (1km) apart. To find your UTM position, read the easting value from the bottom margin and the northing from the left margin. Your GPS in UTM mode will show the same values.

Entering Waypoints from Trail Guides

Trail guides often give trailhead coordinates in DD (47.6062, -122.3321). If your GPS is in DDM mode, use this converter to convert to DDM before manually entering. Alternatively, most modern GPS devices also accept DD input — check your manual.

Using AllTrails and Gaia GPS

AllTrails and Gaia GPS show coordinates in DD by default. You can tap any point on the map to see its coordinates. Both apps can import/export waypoints in GPX format, which stores coordinates in DD. This is the most convenient format for sharing trailhead locations.
