How to Convert MGRS to UTM: Step by Step
- 1 Parse MGRS into zone number, zone letter, column letter, row letter, easting digits, northing digits.
- 2 Column letter → absolute easting: (colIndex+1)×100000 + easting_in_100km.
- 3 Row letter + zone number parity → northing within 2000km cycle.
- 4 Resolve northing cycle using zone letter to get absolute northing.
- 5 Result: same zone number and letter as MGRS, with absolute easting and northing.
Worked Example
Input
31UDQ4825111943
Latitude conversion:
D=col 3 → (3+1)×100000+48251=448251 easting
Longitude conversion:
Q=row 14 → 14×100000+11943=1411943 raw → +2×2M=5411943
Result:
31U 448251 5411943
Why Convert MGRS to UTM?
GIS software and mapping databases often use UTM rather than MGRS.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ✕ Wrong column set based on zone mod 3
- ✕ Not resolving the correct 2,000km northing cycle
